About VCE Latin Mastery

Who created this

I am a recent VCE graduate who achieved a study score in the mid-40s in Latin, placing me among the top-performing students in the subject in Victoria. I sat the VCE Latin Units 3 & 4 written examination and experienced firsthand the scarcity of quality practice materials available to students. No major publisher — TSSM, NEAP, Insight, ATAR Notes, Cambridge Checkpoints — produces VCE Latin practice exams. This resource gap is why VCE Latin Mastery exists.

What these resources are

VCE Latin Mastery produces practice exam sets for VCE Latin Units 3 & 4, covering the prescribed seen text: Virgil's Aeneid Book X. There are 17 individual practice sets, each covering a specific passage of approximately 15–25 lines. Every set follows the exact structure of the real VCAA written examination:

• Section 2A (Part A): 15 marks of comprehension questions testing understanding of the Latin passage
• Section 2B (Part B): 15 marks of interpretation questions testing knowledge of poetic and literary techniques and scansion of hexameter verse
• Section 2C (Part C): 20 marks split into an 8-mark passage-focused essay and a 12-mark extended essay linking to Book X and the Aeneid as a whole
• Total: 50 marks per set, mirroring the real exam

The methodology behind the model answers

Every set includes full model solutions for Parts A and B. These model solutions have been cross-referenced against academic commentaries on Aeneid X, including:

• S.J. Harrison, Vergil: Aeneid 10 (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1991)
• Andreola Rossi, Vergil: Aeneid 10 (Focus/Hackett, 2024)
• Christopher Tanfield, Virgil: Aeneid X — A Selection (Bloomsbury, 2016)

Part C does not include model answers. Instead, it reproduces the VCAA's own holistic assessment criteria, consistent with how the real exam is marked. Students and teachers working through these sets use the same criteria that VCAA markers apply.

Copyright and legal

The original questions, model answers, and commentary in these sets are my intellectual property under the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth). Virgil's Latin text is in the public domain. The exam sets are licensed for individual student use only — they may not be shared, distributed, uploaded to shared drives, or redistributed in any form. School and class licences are available separately; please contact us for institutional pricing.

These materials are not endorsed by the VCAA. VCE® is a registered trademark of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. The practice exam structure reflects the published VCAA study design — which is a public document — but no actual VCAA examination questions are reproduced.

A note on references to academic commentaries

The model answers reference and paraphrase the arguments of Harrison, Rossi, and Tanfield with full attribution. All direct quotations from these commentaries are kept short in accordance with Australian fair dealing for the purpose of criticism and review. If you are a teacher or student who wishes to consult these commentaries directly, Harrison is the most comprehensive scholarly resource; Rossi (Focus/Hackett) is designed for intermediate students and is the most accessible for secondary-level study.
